Treadmills, matched to how you move

Walk, run or climb toward the result you want.

Compare walking pads, folding treadmills, performance runners and curved machines by what they actually help you achieve.

Start with your training.

The right treadmill depends less on hype and more on the session: steady steps, long runs, steep climbs or repeatable sprints.

Daily movement

Desk walking & step goals

Prioritise compact storage, low noise and a comfortable walking speed.

General fitness

Weight loss & cardio

Look for incline range, guided sessions and a deck you will enjoy using consistently.

Endurance

5K to half-marathon

Choose a stable frame, full running belt and motor designed for sustained training.

Sport conditioning

Football, rugby & combat sports

Fast speed changes and repeatable intervals matter for hard conditioning blocks.

Strength endurance

Hills, hiking & glutes

Higher incline capability increases climbing demand through the posterior chain.

Power

Sprints, CrossFit & HYROX

Rapid acceleration, firm footing and curved/manual options suit explosive efforts.

Choose the right treadmill type.

Each format solves a different space, budget and performance problem.

1
Walking pad

Best for steps, light walking and rooms where storage is the first constraint.

2
Folding treadmill

The versatile home choice for walking, jogging and regular recreational running.

3
Performance treadmill

A larger, more stable running platform for volume, speed and household sharing.

4
Curved or manual

Self-powered resistance for sprint mechanics, intervals and athletic conditioning.

What matters before you buy.

Motor & dutyCompare sustained output and the maker’s intended walking or running use—not peak claims alone.
Usable beltTaller runners and faster paces need more length and width for a natural stride.
Speed & inclineMatch the range to your actual sessions, from recovery walks to hills and intervals.
Stability & cushioningA rigid frame and well-controlled deck feel safer when pace and impact rise.
Room dimensionsAllow for ceiling height at maximum incline plus safe space behind the belt.
Folded size & capacityCheck real stored dimensions, machine weight and supported user weight.

Running is a whole-body movement, with most of the repeated load passing through the lower body and trunk.

Incline changes the demand: steeper walking typically shifts more work toward the glutes and calves while increasing cardiovascular effort at a lower speed.

Treadmills

Motor power (CHP), not top speed, is the spec that actually matters

CHP not peak HP
The spec that predicts long-term reliability
Folding vs fixed
Space-saving trades off frame stability
Belt size
Longer/wider decks suit taller runners

Pros

  • Folding decks reclaim significant floor space in smaller homes
  • Non-folding decks generally handle sustained running loads better long-term

Cons

  • Peak horsepower figures on the box routinely overstate real sustained motor performance
  • Cheaper folding decks can develop belt slip or frame flex under regular running use

About Treadmills

Treadmills split into folding and non-folding models: folding decks save floor space between sessions but almost always use a lighter motor and a less stable frame than a permanent, non-folding deck built for daily heavy use. The single most misleading spec on a treadmill listing is peak horsepower, a marketing figure measured in short bursts the motor can’t actually sustain during a real run. Continuous horsepower (CHP) is the number that reflects what the motor can deliver hour after hour, and it’s the one worth comparing between models — a machine listed as “3.5 HP peak” might only run at 1.5-2.0 CHP, which is fine for walking but will strain under regular running.

Frequently asked questions

What CHP rating do I actually need?

As a rough guide, 2.0-2.5 CHP is generally adequate for walking and light jogging, while regular running — especially for heavier users — is better served by 3.0 CHP or above; check the manufacturer’s continuous rating specifically, not just the headline peak figure on the packaging.

Are you a fitness equipment retailer yourselves?

No — Compare Fitness Equipment is an independent comparison and information service. We don’t sell equipment directly; we help you compare categories and connect with partner retailers.

Is all the pricing and spec guidance on this site guaranteed?

No — figures mentioned (CHP ranges, flywheel weights, subscription costs, ceiling clearances) are typical ranges from trade sources and manufacturer specs, not fixed quotes for any specific product. Always check the exact spec sheet for the model you’re considering.

What happens after I request a quote or recommendation?
