Compatibility before connectivity claims
Heart-Rate Monitors & Fitness Sensors
Choose the measurement method and connection your equipment supports: electrical chest straps prioritise signal fidelity, while optical arm sensors prioritise placement flexibility.
Pros
- External sensors can connect live heart-rate data to compatible equipment and apps.
- Dedicated recording modes can capture sessions without a nearby display.
Cons
- Protocol support does not guarantee every app or machine will pair correctly.
- Fit, movement, skin contact and environmental conditions can affect readings.
About Fitness Sensors
Compare measurement method, placement, Bluetooth channel count, ANT+ and analogue 5 kHz support, recording memory, battery type and life, water resistance, strap sizes, washable components, app dependence and firmware support. Confirm compatibility with the exact treadmill, bike, rower, watch or app model before purchase.
Chest strap vs optical arm sensor
| Check | Electrical chest sensor | Optical arm sensor |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement | Electrical signal at the chest | Optical blood-flow changes at arm/temple |
| Power | Often replaceable coin cell | Usually rechargeable |
| Placement | Snug chest strap and electrode contact | Upper arm, forearm or compatible goggle clip |

FAQs
Is a chest strap always more accurate?
Electrical chest sensors generally respond more directly to rapid heart-rate changes, but correct fit and electrode contact still matter. Optical performance also varies with placement and movement.
What is the difference between Bluetooth and ANT+?
They are separate wireless protocols. Some sensors broadcast both, while the receiving machine or app may support only one or restrict simultaneous connections.
Can a heart-rate sensor detect a heart problem?
It is not a diagnostic medical device. Unexpected readings, chest pain, faintness or other concerning symptoms require appropriate medical assessment.
