Stack weight is not always handle resistance
Selectorised Multi-Gyms & Weight-Stack Machines
The usable resistance, exercise stations and adjustment range matter more than the total weight shown on the stack.
Pros
- Resistance changes are fast and weights remain enclosed.
- Multi-station designs provide several exercises in one purchase.
Cons
- The fixed stack caps future progression.
- Combined machines may compromise positioning compared with dedicated stations.
About Selectorised Equipment
Selectorised machines use a pin to connect part of an internal stack. Compare the ratio, smallest increment, maximum usable resistance, number of genuinely distinct stations and whether adjustments suit every intended user. “Multi-gym” can mean a compact single-user unit or a large multi-station system, so measure working clearance rather than relying on the frame footprint.
Dedicated station vs multi-gym
| Check | Dedicated machine | Multi-gym |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Purpose-built setup | Several exercises share frame/stack |
| Space | More machines required | Consolidated footprint |
| Users | One station each | May create queueing unless multi-station |

Frequently asked questions
Is stack weight the resistance lifted?
Only on a stated 1:1 system. Other ratios change handle resistance and cable travel.
Can a multi-gym replace free weights?
It can cover many movements but does not reproduce every free-weight exercise, loading pattern or stabilisation demand.
What should multiple users check?
Seat/pad range, increment size, station conflicts, adjustment speed and the manufacturer’s usage rating.
