Visibility, surface and setup first
Agility ladders, hurdles and cones
Portable agility equipment is inexpensive, but poor visibility, unstable hurdles or unsuitable surfaces can make a session harder to organise rather than better. Compare dimensions, adjustment, impact behaviour and storage before counting the number of pieces in a kit.
Tools serve different drill layouts
Flat agility ladder
Defines repeated foot-placement zones. Check total length, rung width, rung adjustment and whether the ladder stays flat on the intended surface.
Mini hurdle
Adds a visible obstacle and may be fixed, collapsible or height-adjustable. Impact behaviour matters more than the tallest setting.
Marker cone or disc
Creates boundaries, turns and target points. Compare visibility, wind stability, flexibility and whether cones stack without sticking.
Pole-and-cone system
Builds adjustable gates or higher obstacles. Confirm pole diameter, supported heights, weighted bases and the space required if struck.
Key buying decisions
| Equipment | Measurements | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Ladder | Total length, usable width and rung spacing | Are rungs fixed or adjustable, and how is the ladder anchored or tensioned? |
| Hurdle | Width and available heights | Does it fold or displace when contacted, and is that behaviour supported by the maker? |
| Cone | Height, base width and weight | Can it remain visible and stable on the intended indoor or outdoor surface? |
| Carry bag | Internal capacity and closure | Does the complete wet or dirty kit fit without forcing sharp bends? |
Setup and storage checklist
- Measure the complete drill area, including acceleration, deceleration and run-off space.
- Use high-visibility colours appropriate to the floor, lighting and weather.
- Choose hurdles that respond appropriately if contacted; do not improvise rigid obstacles.
- Check rung and cone surfaces for cracks, sharp edges and deformation.
- Secure ladders only using the manufacturer’s permitted method for that surface.
- Separate indoor clean kit from muddy outdoor kit and allow it to dry before storage.
- For group sessions, provide circulation around the drill rather than through it.
- Do not present a kit as automatically improving speed or sport performance without an appropriate programme and coaching.
Current examples
FORZA Speed & Agility Football Training Ladder
This flat ladder is offered in 3 m and 6 m lengths with a published width of 40 cm, high-visibility plastic rungs and nylon edges. It illustrates the core ladder decisions: total run length, usable width, rung layout and how the product sits on the intended surface.
BXR Cone, Ladder and Hurdle Set
This contrasting kit combines twenty 12-inch cones with ten 30-inch poles and offers three pole heights through the cone holes. It shows the convenience and compromise of bundled systems: buyers should confirm component dimensions, base stability, impact response, bag capacity and replacement availability.

Indoor and outdoor use
Lightweight equipment that is easy to carry can also move in wind or slide on polished floors. A product described as suitable for grass may use pegs that must not be used on indoor flooring; a flat indoor ladder may need another approved method outdoors. Check the product instructions and inspect the training area for holes, water, loose material and traffic before setup.
Agility equipment defines a drill; it does not prescribe workload, direction changes or jump volume. Programming should suit the users, sport and surface, with appropriate coaching where performance or return from injury is involved.
Frequently asked questions
Are adjustable-rung ladders better?
They allow spacing changes, but fixed rungs may be faster to deploy and remain more consistent. Choose for the intended session.
Should hurdles be rigid?
Impact behaviour is a key safety consideration. Use products designed for the drill and follow the manufacturer’s orientation and height instructions.
Is a large bundle automatically better value?
No. Count only the components, sizes and replacements you will actually use, and check whether everything fits the supplied bag.
Regional agility-ladder examples
Flat, weighted and roll-out ladders solve different setup problems. Ladder drills practise movement patterns; they do not by themselves guarantee faster sport performance.
🇺🇸 United States — SKLZ Quick Ladder
SKLZ positions this portable ladder for acceleration, lateral movement and direction-change drills. Check rung spacing, anchor method, surface grip and whether a fixed or adjustable layout better suits the coaching plan.
🇮🇪 Ireland — Precision Training Indoor Speed Agility Ladder
McSport lists a 4 m ladder with 20-inch soft non-slip rungs and added stabilising weights. It is designed to reduce movement on indoor floors, though the training area still needs adequate traction and clearance.
🇨🇦 Canada — Concorde Pro Agility Ladder
Northern Fitness describes nylon-covered metal rungs for a durable flat-rung format. Compare its rigidity and storage behaviour with flexible plastic-rung ladders, especially when equipment is moved frequently between field and gym.
🇦🇺 Australia — SMAI Rubber Rollout Agility Ladder
This one-piece rubber design rolls out rather than unfolding separate straps and rungs. It can simplify setup and reduce tangles, but total weight, roll storage and grip on the intended indoor or outdoor surface should be checked.
