Balance cushioning with stability

Exercise Mats

Thickness is only one part of comfort: density, grip, usable length and the exercise determine whether a mat feels supportive or unstable.

Pros

  • Creates a cleaner, grippier and more comfortable exercise surface.
  • Light mats roll or hang away when not in use.

Cons

  • Very soft mats can feel unstable during standing exercises.
  • Thin foam can compress quickly on hard or uneven floors.

About Exercise Mats

Compare length, width, thickness, foam density, closed- or open-cell construction, grip on both sides, cleaning instructions, hanging eyelets, carrying method and warranty. Yoga-style stability, floor-exercise cushioning and under-equipment protection are different requirements; an exercise mat should not be substituted for impact-rated gym flooring beneath dropped weights.

8 mm vs 15 mm

Check Thinner, denser mat Thicker exercise mat
Standing balance Usually firmer and more stable May compress or wobble more
Floor work Moderate cushioning More separation from a hard floor
Storage Smaller rolled profile Bulkier roll

FAQs

Is a thicker exercise mat always better?

No. Extra thickness can feel more comfortable for some floor exercises but less stable during standing or balance-focused movements.

Can I put gym equipment on an exercise mat?

Only where the manufacturer permits it. Thin exercise mats are not equivalent to purpose-made equipment mats or impact-rated rubber flooring.

How should I clean the mat?

Follow its care instructions. Many closed-cell mats can be wiped with mild soapy water, but strong chemicals or soaking may damage some materials.
