Chest, Shoulder & Rowing Strength Machines

Choose the path, handles and user fit

Chest, shoulder and rowing strength machines

Upper-body strength machines can use similar frames while producing very different movement paths. Seat geometry, handle position, independent arms and resistance system determine who can set up comfortably and how the machine fits a wider equipment mix.

Separate the movement families

Chest press

Horizontal, incline and converging designs place the user and handles differently. Check starting handle position, backrest angle and whether a smaller user can reach the release without losing contact with the pad.

Shoulder press

Overhead-oriented machines vary in seat angle, grip options and path. Ceiling clearance and the relationship between the seat, handles and shoulder position deserve more attention than load capacity alone.

Seated or chest-supported row

Rows differ by elbow path, chest-pad position and grip. Confirm whether the seat and chest support adjust separately and whether handles pivot or follow a fixed path.

Resistance systems compared

System Advantages Limitations to verify
Selectorised stack Fast load changes and straightforward shared use Stack increments, cable ratio, first increment, cable servicing and total height
Plate-loaded lever Works with Olympic plates and may allow independent arm loading Starting lever weight, sleeve length, plate storage and side-loading space
Cable or functional trainer Multiple handle paths from one station Less fixed support, pulley ratio, bench positioning and setup time
Multi-function press/row Can reduce footprint and purchase count Mode changes and compromises in seat, pad or handle geometry

What to verify before shortlisting

  • Handle start position: check reach before resistance begins and whether it adjusts.
  • Grip choices: neutral, pronated and rotating grips are not interchangeable for every user.
  • Independent arms: confirm whether they move independently and whether the resistance is truly unilateral.
  • Seat and pad increments: visible, repeatable settings help shared users recreate a position.
  • Movement path: converging, diverging and fixed arcs feel different and should not be inferred from the product name.
  • Starting resistance: plate-loaded arms and the first stack increment may exclude some intended users.
  • Footprint and circulation: include lever travel, plate loading, adjustment access and transfer space.
  • Commercial support: compare upholstery, bearings, cables, service response and parts availability.

Planning a balanced machine area

A facility does not automatically need every press and row variation. Start with the audience and the movements already covered by racks, benches, cables and multi-gyms. A broad-use chest press and adjustable cable station may serve a general facility better than several specialised plate-loaded machines; a bodybuilding gym may value multiple paths and small load increments differently.

Place paired machines so users can adjust them without entering another station’s operating zone. Plate-loaded machines also need clear access to sleeves and storage horns. Confirm that high frames, arms and signs remain below the available ceiling and do not interfere with lighting, sprinklers or ventilation; use appropriately qualified advice for building-services questions.

Current examples illustrating three approaches

Matrix Go Series Chest Press

Matrix lists a 72 kg total stack and overall dimensions of 101 × 118 × 137 cm. This selectorised design illustrates the quick-adjustment option for mixed users. Buyers should still confirm increment size, starting position, seat range, delivery format and the warranty applicable to their facility.

Technogym Pure Strength Shoulder Press

This plate-loaded commercial machine is listed at 129 × 126 × 148.5 cm and 140 kg, with a published unloaded resistance of 0.5 kg. It demonstrates why starting resistance, frame height and loading access should be examined separately from the plates a buyer intends to add.

Matrix Magnum Seated Row

This plate-loaded row uses an adjustable ratcheting seat and a chest-supported position. It represents the dedicated pulling alternative to a cable station. Confirm current dimensions, unloaded resistance, handle path, sleeve capacity, storage and service arrangements directly with Matrix.

A note on “rowing machines”

This page covers strength machines used for rowing or pulling movements. It is separate from indoor rowing ergometers, which use air, magnetic or water resistance for repeated full-body strokes and are compared on the dedicated rowing-machines page.

Frequently asked questions

Are independent arms automatically better?

No. They can support unilateral use, but handle geometry, resistance balance, user fit and the facility’s goals still determine value.

Should a commercial gym choose selectorised or plate-loaded?

Selectorised machines favour rapid adjustment and broad accessibility; plate-loaded machines may better suit strength-focused audiences. Many facilities use both.

Can one multi-gym replace all three?

It may cover several press and row patterns, but compare the actual seat, handle and cable setups rather than relying on an exercise-count claim.

Regional chest-press examples

These distinct machines illustrate selectorised, plate-loaded and compact home formats. Check seat geometry, starting position, handle options, resistance increments and intended-use warranty.

🇺🇸 United States — Atlantis P140 Seated Converging Chest Press

Atlantis specifies independent converging arms and a spring-assisted pre-stretch pedal. It is a commercial selectorised example where the usable starting position, seat range and weight-stack increments should be tested across the intended user population.
