Compare fill, handles and closure
Sandbags and functional training bags
A useful training bag should behave predictably enough for its intended movements while retaining the shifting-load character the buyer wants. Shell material, inner fillers, handle placement and closure construction matter more than the largest weight printed on the product.
Choose the load behaviour first
Fixed-weight power bag
Arrives at a set weight and is usually straightforward for shared classes. It cannot be adjusted, but it avoids loose filler and repeated weighing.
Fillable multi-handle sandbag
Uses one or more inner filler bags inside a handled shell. It offers adjustable loading, but closure quality and how fully each filler is packed affect movement.
Strongman-style bag
Typically cylindrical with few or no handles and intended for bear-hug lifts, shouldering and carries. It is not interchangeable with a handled exercise bag.
Construction details to inspect
| Feature | Why it matters | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Outer shell | Controls abrasion and seam durability | Material, denier where stated, reinforced stress points and cleaning instructions |
| Inner filler | Contains sand and determines adjustment | Number of fillers, individual capacity, closure and whether filler is included |
| Handles | Changes usable grips and seam loading | Count, position, width, padding and reinforcement—not simply “multi-grip” wording |
| Main closure | Protects the fillers during movement | Zip, flap, hook-and-loop coverage and manufacturer filling instructions |
| Shape at target weight | Underfilled bags can fold or move very differently | Recommended fill medium and usable range for each shell size |
Buyer checklist
- Choose the movements and grip positions before choosing a bag style.
- Confirm whether the quoted weight is bag capacity, supplied fixed weight or the buyer’s target fill.
- Use only the filler type and filling procedure permitted by the manufacturer.
- Check whether throwing, dropping or outdoor use is explicitly supported.
- Allow a clear training zone that accounts for carries, cleans and bag movement.
- Inspect handles, seams, zips, filler closures and abrasion before each shared-use session.
- Compare storage when filled; a heavy flexible bag is awkward to stack or move casually.
- Verify domestic or commercial warranty and exclusions for impact or outdoor use.
Current examples showing different formats
Bulldog Gear Competition Sandbag
This prefilled competition-style bag is offered in 10 kg, 20 kg and 30 kg variants for carries and lunges. It illustrates the convenience of a known fixed weight and consistent external format. Buyers should confirm current dimensions, permitted surfaces, cleaning, delivery and whether the specification matches any event rules they intend to follow.
Cerberus GP Training Sandbag
Cerberus describes eight reinforced grab handles and multiple available sizes, with no separate filler bags required. This is the contrasting multi-handle training format. Check the chosen model’s precise capacity, supplied fill state, dimensions, closure instructions and supported use before buying.
GORUCK Simple Training Sandbag
This design deliberately uses two padded handles rather than a large handle array. It demonstrates that more handles are not automatically better: grip simplicity may be the intended feature. Confirm shell size, filler arrangement, current availability, warranty and import/delivery terms for the UK.

Fixed weight or adjustable?
Fixed bags are easier to catalogue and deploy in classes: the label and actual load should remain consistent. Fillable bags allow one shell to cover different loads, but changing fill takes time and an underfilled unit can behave unlike the same shell at its intended capacity. For a facility, several fixed increments may improve throughput; for a home user, a carefully chosen adjustable shell can reduce the number of products stored.
Do not assume a training bag can be repeatedly slammed or dropped because it looks rugged. Impact use, surfaces and warranty coverage must be confirmed. Sand leakage can damage floors and equipment, so filler containment and inspection are operational issues rather than cosmetic details.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fill any training bag with anything heavy?
No. Use the manufacturer’s permitted filler and procedure. Sharp aggregate, wet material or overfilling can damage liners and alter handling.
Are more handles always more versatile?
They create more grip options, but handle reinforcement, placement and the intended movement matter more than count alone.
Is the labelled capacity the actual supplied weight?
Not necessarily. Some bags arrive prefilled, while others quote the maximum or target capacity of an empty shell. Read the exact listing.
Regional functional-training bag examples
Each example uses a different construction and loading approach. Confirm whether filler is included, permitted fill material, actual working range, closure maintenance and whether dropping is allowed.
🇺🇸 United States — REP Fitness Weightlifting Sandbags
REP lists 1000D Cordura construction, reinforced stitching, separate filler bags and four adjustable ranges from 5–25 lb through 125–200 lb. The modular format supports weight changes, but it introduces more closures to inspect and maintain.
🇮🇪 Ireland — Strength Shop Functional Competition Sandbag
This filled-format Irish listing offers fixed 10, 20 and 30 kg choices for carries, cleans, lunges and presses. A fixed labelled weight simplifies class setup, while buyers should still confirm handle count, outer-material care and whether impact or dropping is permitted.
🇨🇦 Canada — Bells of Steel Fitness Sandbags
The Canadian range uses Cordura fabric and a multi-stage leak-prevention system for adjustable functional training. Compare the selected shell capacity with the desired working weight and follow the stated fill and closure instructions rather than overpacking it.
🇦🇺 Australia — SMAI Hybrid Competition Sandbag
SMAI lists reinforced grip handles—seven on most sizes and six on the 10 kg option—supporting carries and multi-directional movements. Buyers should compare fixed size, handle placement, surface grip and competition requirements rather than weight alone.
